Groin pain or more specifically, athletic groin pain, is a troublesome and nagging injury to any player. Many players try to work through the pain, or strengthen up by doing squats and gym work but only to find that pain is still there when they go back out running. This is because the original compensation that is irritating your groin has not been identified and treated.

Groin pain, or athletic groin pain, is as a result of biomechanical compensation patterns due to weaknesses in the lumbopelvic region. The latest evidence on groin pain has divided this complicated and persisting pain into 3 categories:

  • Inguinal Related Groin pain
  • Adductor Related Groin pain
  • Iliopsoas related Groin pain
  • Pubic Related Groin pain

Each one of these conditions has a different set of symptoms, from which your physiotherapist will make a diagnosis. As anybody that has groin pain knows that it is one of those niggling injuries that you can put up with to play sport, but over time that pain gets worse until eventually, you have to stop all sport and rest.

Unfortunately, rest alone does not solve the issue of groin pain.

The reason for your groin pain and discomfort is due to the way you are moving and the alternate movement pattern is due to poor lumbopelvic control. This, in turn, overloads the groin region, thus causing you pain.

The reason rest will not cure groin pain is that, yes the pain is reduced, but the dysfunction and weakness will still remain unless you target specific areas YOU are weak in.
